This past Wednesday, a heartbreaking scene took place during what should’ve been a cheerful celebration of the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl win. 3 shooters rampaged through a Chiefs celebration parade, wounding 21 innocent fans and killing 1.
When asked in a press conference, Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson revealed that 8 were in immediate life-threatening conditions, 7 were in life-threatening conditions, and 6 sustained minor injuries.
The life stolen was that of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a beloved DJ of the KC area. Lisa G was a mother of 2 and a lifelong fan of the Chiefs. Celebrating with her husband, who was also shot, Lisa was ripped from her family and the KC community. Stephanie Meyer, a chief nursing officer for Children’s Mercy Kansas City shared saddening news that she treated 11 kids from the ages 6-15. While they are all expected to make a full recovery, it is traumatizing and terrifying to know that they will live the rest of their lives carrying this horror.
Onlookers pulled out their phones at the scene, sharing disheartening videos of the shooting. One video features a fan doing chest compressions on a victim while another features two fans tackling one of the shooters. After the shooting, the NFL released the following statement, expressing genuine feelings of sadness and respect for the first responders:
“We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected. We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.”.
It is horrifying and upsetting to know that what should’ve been an exciting, joyous event was turned into a disaster and now can only be remembered as a terror.
